Nearpod is a Math Section Lifesavior

During my student teaching I have been using more and more technology and have recently began to use Nearpod more in my mini lectures. I have used Nearpod before and if you have not used Nearpod it is a presentation application, where students each have the presentation on their iPad, but the presenter controls the speed that the students can see the presentation. The presenter can also include videos, pictures, and many different types of hands-on activities to keep students engaged in the lesson.

I have a very demanding class that needs to have many different lessons throughout the week, and a typical math session includes a 20-30 minute mini lecture, with 15-20 minutes of independent work, and if there is time, 10-15 minutes of independent games in stations. When we have new information the lectures may take longer so keeping the students engagement is very important, especially with a very active and demanding class.

Nearpod allows all the students to have the presentation right in front of them, rather than a worksheet, or a powerpoint. In addition I can include many different types of activities such as a drawing activity for students to write, or type to solve problems, answer questions, etc. Activities can also be quizzes, fill in the blank, videos, and much more. These activities are important to keep student engagement, differentiate instruction, and have formative assessment in my lessons. I can also share student work in seconds to show examples and model to students.

To any teacher that is looking to increase engagement in their lessons, I really recommend using Nearpod to help create differentiated instruction, engaging lessons, and improve student learning in the classroom.

  1. I like NearPod or Peardeck. I am using it in W200 too. Can you share some activities or Nearpod presentations that you have done in the elementary classroom?

    • We mostly use Nearpod for math lessons. We used them to help teach about decimals and allow the students to have pictures of 100’s grids and fill them in by coloring to complete the problems. This hands on learning really helped my students visually grasp what decimals look like rather than just being numbers. I have also used Nearpod to help teach point of view and perspective. It was really helpful to show students different pictures of examples right in their hand and have them perform activities rather than watching at the front of the board.
